COOL RARE REPORT!! ONLY ONE AVAILABLE!!This is Vermont Geological Survey Economic Geology Paper #1,
A Report on Magnetic Surveys of Ultramafic Bodies in the Dover, Windham, and Ludlow Areas, Vermont
. This 11x9 inch book is 54 pages and contains numerous maps within the text of areas covered by this study. Two short articles help explain the purpose and results of the study.
The ultramafic rocks were big business in Vermont. They were mined for industrial minerals, iron, and talc but produced many beautiful mineral specimens as well. This study sought to examine the size potential of such rocks in areas where they were known to occur. Magnetic surveys were about the only way they could gauge the size aside from drilling, which was very expensive. So they surveyed several areas where such rocks were known or had been mined to some extent already. One of the maps has a quarry noted on it.
The maps show the specific areas they surveyed. The roads in the maps serve as good landmarks to see exactly where they worked, which is cool, because with Google Earth today you can locate these areas easily. I don't know what development might have occurred after this study was published. Maybe one of more of these areas got developed as mines. Regardless, this is a cool vintage report on some interesting rocks, and would be a great addition to any library on Vermont history or mineral collecting.
These state reports are less common than USGS reports.
