    Description

    SCARCE AND POPULAR!!
    This is USGS Bulletin 1319-D,
Studies Related to Wilderness Primitive Areas: Sawtooth, Idaho
. This report consists of the 174-page book and both original maps, one showing geology the other showing sample locations. Published in 1970, there were probably never many of these around. The area covered in this work is about
    314 square miles
in the rugged Sawtooth Mountains area of Central Idaho. It is beautiful country that could be made even more interesting by bringing this along on any backpacking or hiking trip. Much of this area went on to become the Sawtooth Wilderness area, as a result of this study. The geology is diverse, with exposures of metamorphic rocks intruded by younger granites of the Idaho Batholith. Almost all of the area is mountainous terrain.
The geology of the area is covered in detail and the search for mineral resources is detailed as well, including investigations of some many claims  and mines in the area. Over one hundred pages are devoted to descriptions of the mines and prospects, which were mainly for gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc and molybdenum. However, even beryllium is mentioned as one of the commodities in the area, and four prospects containing blue green beryl in pegmatites are specifically discussed and located in the book, in a wider area where beryl is noted as common. Manganese, niobium and uranium are also discussed! Some old mines and prospects are noted:
    Little Queens mine
    - a lode Gold-Silver mine
    Leggit Creek
    - Silver and Lead veins
    Placer Gold Locations
    in many areas
Other areas specifically noted for Silver and Gold
Many of the Wilderness Studies looked at areas with little to no mineralization or mining, however this area is noted for over 700 mining claims and many prospects. As such it is a treasure throve of information that could lead you to some cool mineral collecting. All in all it is a scarce and very interesting and complete work on a beautiful area. Don’t miss it!
