SCARCE ITEM!!!This is USGS Bulletin 830-A,
Copper Deposits NEar Keating, Oregon
. Published in 1931, It includes the 32-page book and all three of the original maps, two of which are in the pocket in the back, and the other is a fold out map bound into the text. All are pictured above.
This scarce old report describes the copper deposits and mining in an area about fifteen miles northeast of Baker City, Oregon. The deposits are in the foothills of the Wallowa mountains, and are just part of a series of deposits over 75 miles long. Near Keating, the deposits include the following mines and prospects:
Oregon Copper Co
Clover Creek Copper Co
Copper Queen mine
Other prospects
The locations for these are quite specific.
Minerals mentioned in the text include:
Chrysocolla
Azurite
Malachite
Barite
Chalcopyrite
Pyrite
Gold
Quartz
Sericite
Ankerite
Calcite
Chacedony
Cuprite
Bornite
Significant silver was also noted in the ores. And who knows what other minerals have been found since?
The whole thing makes for interesting reading, and the maps are really cool. Many of the minerals listed are colorful and desirable to mineral collectors. This is a great report on a little-known mining area with some great minerals, and should be of interest to mineral collectors, historians, and anyone else that wants to give the place a shot. Unusual to find this with all the maps, especially after all these years. Would also make a great gift!
Note that any reports older than the 1940's are scarcer than later reports. This is one I seldom see.
