Description
RARE OLD ITEM!! CLASSIC MAP!! GREAT PHOTOS!!This is Topographic and Geologic Survey Report #4,
Mineral Pigments of Pennsylvania.
Published in
1911
, this is a rare item to find complete. This report consists of the 101-page book and the original long fold out map of one of the principal areas at Lehigh Gap.
This book details the geology, mining, and processing of mineral pigments in Pennsylvania. The pigments mined were various forms of iron oxides like limonite and ochre, which I guess is a mixture of hematite and limonite in various proportions. The also mined black, yellow, and red shales, plus minor amounts of graphite, barite, chromite, talc and other commodities. They were highly valued for use in paints and not available in good quality from very many sources. Some of the better P
ennsylvania deposits were of high quality, and extensive.
Some of the areas discussed include:
Easton-Reading
Quaker Hill
Doylestown
Bethel
Neversink Mountain
Muncy
Moosehead
Lehigh Gap
And many,
many
other areas.
The book also contains many interesting photos of mines, mills, process facilities and the like, plus a couple diagrams in the text.
This is a great item that would be of interest to residents, historians, geologists, or really anyone that just wants to know a bit more about their state or area. These state publications are harder to find than USGS bulletins. This is especially true of the older ones like this.
