  • Condition: the finish on the mounting has mellowed with age and handling, the cameo has a slight hairline barely visible on the front, on the tan background, near the forehead running in a vertical to the shoulder, looks stable, on the back you will notice a shiny line, sort of diagonal, I can't figure out what it is, perhaps old glue, but the cameo is not cracked in that area when you turn it over and see the front, puzzling, it could just be a drip of glue, sold as is, as found, from the estate of a retired antique dealer.

    Antique Victorian circa 1880s cameo brooch pin, oval gold filled mounting with double rope twist surround, featuring an Italian hand carved shell cameo, a classical profile facing to the right, the carving is "naive', rather primitive and stylized, but the simple carving is quite striking, the white stands out nicely on the tan layer of the shell, the strong profile of the face with braided hair style is beautiful, measuring 1-5/8" x 1-3/8" overall, has 19th c. simple C scroll clasp and T-bar hinge, condition: the finish on the mounting has mellowed with age and handling, the cameo has a slight hairline barely visible on the front, on the tan background, near the forehead running in a vertical to the shoulder, looks stable, on the back you will notice a shiny line, sort of diagonal, I can't figure out what it is, perhaps old glue, but the cameo is not cracked in that area when you turn it over and see the front, puzzling, it could just be a drip of glue, sold as is, as found, from the estate of a retired antique dealer.
