Description
------- From the estate of an old, Princeton, New Jersey family, who ran a blacksmith and a tinsmith shop (located on street down by the Delaware and Raritan canal): this is an unusually shaped, tinsmith made, canal boat/barge/fog or sounding horn.
Normally, sounding horns are long and straight. This one is unusual in its unique design - doubling back on itself , with masterfully cut + soldered bevel joints - made it compact and free-standing. Notice, too, the subtle narrowing of the tube of the horn after it turns each corner - just as it would have been made on a straight canal horn. An historic and sculptural piece of late Victorian folk art / whimsy.
We believe it was made as a tenth wedding (Tin) anniversary gift, within the family that owned the tinsmithing shop, and was never meant to be sold or for practical use on a canal barge. It did not come with a mouthpiece - one might be needed to blow this horn as the mouth opening is quite close to the body of the horn, see photo detail. We have not tried to blow the horn 🙂 .
(Please note: The last photo is of a Victorian invitation to a Tin Wedding Anniversary party, and is shown for information, and is not included in this offering. I can print it for the buyer. The name on the invitation has no relation to this horn’s history.)
